The short answer

A law firm needs to screen every client, and the beneficial owners behind corporate clients, against PEP, sanctions and adverse-media data, then keep monitoring them as matters run. The best fit is software that handles both individual and business screening in one place, records every decision for your file, and lets everyone who opens a matter run a check without a per-seat cost.

Law firms have a particular shape of risk: many clients, corporate structures behind them, and partners who each open matters. These four criteria reflect that.

Screen individuals and, for corporate clients, the entity and its ultimate beneficial owners. KYB in the same workflow saves chasing ownership data separately.

A client cleared at intake can change status mid-matter. Automated re-screening with alerts keeps you current without re-running checks by hand.

Questions

Common questions about best aml software for australian law firms.

Do Australian law firms need AML software?
From 1 July 2026, many legal practices are captured by the AML/CTF reforms and must enrol with AUSTRAC and run customer due diligence, ongoing monitoring and reporting. Software is not legally mandated, but it is the practical way a firm screens clients, verifies beneficial owners and keeps an audit trail without adding a large manual workload.
What must a law firm screen clients against?
A law firm should screen clients and their beneficial owners against PEP, sanctions and adverse-media data, including the DFAT Consolidated List and major global lists, at onboarding and on an ongoing basis. For corporate clients, that also means verifying the entity and its ownership structure through KYB.
Is MemberCheck or First AML better for a law firm?
It depends on the main need. First AML is built around client onboarding and beneficial-ownership mapping, which suits firms whose challenge is intake and complex structures. MemberCheck is built around continuous screening and monitoring at unlimited-user pricing, which suits firms screening a large client base over time. Some firms use both.
